Sorsogoncity’s Pick – Places to Visit in Sorsogon City circa Mar’20

On 2011, I uploaded this article. And while checking the old articles, I realized that it requires updating. However, instead of updating it, I decided to create an updated article with a few changes from the old one, including pictures. This way, people can still check the places circa 2011; I also tagged it as Orosipon since now it’s part of the story telling series of Sorsogon.

Summer time is just around the corner, so this is very timely.

Here’s the rundown:

  1. River Trekking at Saday and Daku na Busay, Brgy. Guinlajon – From Cawayan bridge to the Saday na Busay is relatively easy; you can actually do rock hopping along the river banks. But going beyond the said falls (Busay is Bikol for water falls), foot trail suddenly vanished.
  2. Hiking to Brgy. Guinlajon’s Hydro-Electric Plant. Enjoy the almost-200 steps

Lake Danao, near the coast of Bacon District.

going to the mountain top from the hydro plant – this is where famous runners – the Ballesteros brothers – would practice their daily run.  From the Maharlika Highway, it takes approx. 45min by foot going to the foot of the stairs. Then another 30min going to the top – again this info is when the author was way younger. If one is more adventurous, he can hike to Bacon district from Brgy. Guinlajon via the mountains dividing Sorsogon and Albay provinces; along the trail, there’s a lake (danao in local parlance) on the side of the mountain.

  3. Enjoy the cold spring water of Brgy. Bucal-bucalan. It’s located a couple of hundred meters north of Pepita Park. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to join the laundry woman doing their chores.
  4. Stay overnight at Tolonggapo Beach or enjoy the sun while lying on the white sand of Paguriran Beach, both in Bacon District. And if you have time after dipping at Paguriran Beach, take the Jamislagan-Sawanga access road and exit to Brgy. Buhatan for a firefly show in the early evening.
  5. Take a river cruise along Buhatan River in Brgy. Buhatan. You have two options, though both requires a river cruise (of course) – have lunch at the mouth of the river after 45m of boat ride or have dinner  in the elevated resto after watching fireflies along the way. It’s a leisurely cruise, and quite apt for bigger groups.
  6. Cawayan River Trekking – one can start from Saday na Busay until he reaches Sorsogon Bay.

This is the western side of Cawayan river relative to the Cawayan Bridge.

  7. Witness the Flora and Fauna of Sorsogon at EDC Eco-Tourism Park – The author haven’t been here yet, but some friends recommended this place. There’s a main contact in the city proper before going to the park. Unfortunately, the author has no additional information on this.
  8. Watch the sun rises/sets in Rimpulas, Brgy. Talisay – a lot of things in life is free. And this one is one of them.

Beautiful rays coming out, around 548am on Dec’04.

An amateur panoramic photo of the Sorsogon Bay at sunset. Taken from the Sorsogon City pier. Click the picture to maximize.

  9. For history buff, like yours truly, one can visit Sorsogon Provincial Museum and Heritage Center. Unfortunately, it’s currently closed for impending transfer to the new site at the old provincial jail. You can also visit the Annunciation Parish church, a Spanish-era church at Bacon district.
  10. Sports
    • One can play tennis at Sorsogon Tennis Club in the Capitol grounds. It’s shell-clay tennis courts. Unfortunately, the other one at Camp. Escudero Sr. has been closed affected by the renovation (or rehab of the camp) of the camp.
    • Sorsogon also hosts to Balogo Sports Complex that hosts to a 400-m running track, a soccer field, open basketball and volleyball courts. It hosted several Bicol Meet events in the last several years.
  11. Food Trip – a typical Pinoy endeavor:
    • Enjoy a cup of Barako coffee and varieties of rice cakes at Tiya Tinay’s. Tip – visit the place earlier than 6am, over the weekend, and you will get a chance to meet some local politicians.
    • Boardroom Snacks and Games Cafe, also at Rompeolas. Don’t miss the chicken wings!
    • Splendido de Rompeolas is a must-visit place. It offers native menu, and a few are family recipes. But better be there early, the place is just small and is quite busy during the peak hours.
    • For an alternative breakfast place than Tiya Tinay’s, try Uro Silogan along Burgos St., Brgy. Burabod. It’s quite new perhaps less than 6m. Cheap, but tasty. And they serve brewed coffee!
    • And for those who simply can’t get away of Manila taste, there are now 2 Jollibee branches less than 500m between each other. Chowking and Greenwich are also present in the city – both all are near the corner of Rizal and Magsaysay Sts.
