South Korean nabbed in Sorsogon for kidnapping

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) – A South Korean national allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a fellow Korean in Cebu last year was arrested in Matnog last night, local police said today.

Erwin Doma, Chief Inspector of the Sorsogon provincial police office, said the suspect, identified as Kim Jong Seok, was nabbed by the policemen from both Anti-Kidnapping Group of the Philippine National Police and the Matnog police station around 9:10 p.m. yesterday at the Matnog Ferry Terminal in Matnog, a town in Sorsogon.

Doma said his arrest was in connection with a pending kidnap- for-ransom case filed against him before the Cebu City judge Gilbert Moises. No bail had been recommended for him, the official added.

According to Doma, Seok is one the four South Koreans implicated in the kidnapping of their fellowman Kwon Young Hoon in Aug. 21 2011, shortly after he arrived for a vacation in Cebu.

The victim was kept at an apartment in Lapu-Lapu and was released two days later after he paid a ransom of $7,000.
