While going around our beloved city a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the ongoing construction on the old Sorsogon Shopping Center, along Magsaysay Street. Based on the notice in front, it’s the future site of SM SaveMore. (I will try to take a picture of it next time).
If this project pushes through, this offers opportunities to middle-income consumers – they will have more options to buy. It also offer jobs to the locales. However, it may be difficult for local entrepreneurs selling dry goods, like the tabora in plasa. I don’t think the wet market will be affected; locales tend to buy fresh produce straight from the wet market. Besides, even in Manila, the fresh produce from the wet market is still cheaper.
Apparently, the gossip of hosting a SM Department Store in Sorsogon wasn’t true at all.
The old shopping center, from what I understand, is leased to the same owner of LKY Building, near Alice Bridge along Magsaysay Street.
