SORSOGON CITY, August 12 (PIA) — An estimated P8 M of production losses and cost of damage to rice crops and 1,630 farmers affected in 9 municipalities were the aftermath of Typhoon Juaning in the province of Sorsogon.
These figures were contained in a report submitted to the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Office (SPDRRMO) by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, through its provincial department head, provincial agriculturist, Mr. David P. Gillego here this week.
As stated in the report of the provincial agriculturist office, the municipality of Donsol had the highest amount of production losses amounting to P2,514,239 of rice crops equivalent to 790 metric tons, with a total area of 725 hectares. planted to standing crops damaged , and 584 farmers affected.
This report was also confirmed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) in a submitted report to their office by the Donsol Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (DDRRMC), where barangay Banwang Gurang in Donsol has been declared in a state of calamity after the typhoon.
According to the municipal agriculturist officer (MAO) of Donsol, the heavy rains has caused unprecedented flooding in 14 barangays and almost all of the rice plantation in those areas already in its vegetative stage were soaked in water with a very nil chance for recovery.
The municipality of Bulan ranked second in the list of areas affected by Typhoon Juaning with P1,910.883 amount of rice production losses , 673 metric tons for gross harvest, with a total area of 1,932 hectares planted to standing crops damaged and 337 farmers affected.
The municipality of Pilar reported production losses of P1, 343,947, with 821 hectares planted to standing crops damaged and 378 farmers affected.
Meanwhile the municipality of Irosin’s production losses amounted to P1,060,108, with 17 barangays affected, 558 hectares of standing crops damaged and 214 farmers affected. Rice crops reportedly were mostly in their vegetative stage.
Juban also reported production losses of P532,887, with 411 has. planted to standing crops damaged and159 farmers affected while the municipality of Gubat’s production losses amounted to P407.826, with 605 has. in standing crops damaged and 180 farmers affected.
Meanwhile Sorsogon City’s production losses amounted to P333.826.22,with a metric tons of 96.75 , and 15 has.. planted to standing crops damaged and with 87 farmers affected.
The municipality of Matnog reported production losses of P48,893, with a minimal 6.08 metric tons ,with 52 farmers affected while the municipality of Castilla showed just a minimal damage production losses of P33,015 , with 12 farmers affected and 15 ha. standing crops also damaged.
“We also have submitted the first copy of this report to the office of the governor, Raul R. Lee. The province has already instructed our office to ascertain the interventions to be implemented by each local government with the aid from the provincial fund coming from the calamity fund”, Gillego explained.
