Red Cross-Sorsogon honors volunteers, exemplifies role

SORSOGON CITY, April 14 (PIA) “We are providing services continuously to the public as part of being an entity with voluntary service commitment”, Atty. Arnulfo Perete , Philippine Red Cross (PRC) – Sorsogon chapter chair and member of the Sanggunian Panlalawigan (SP) usually underscores in every meeting the credo of service and volunteerism that the PRC stands for and upholds.

In a meeting of the PRC held last Wednesday here at Fernando’s Hotel, the different committees tendered their reports on the assistance provided to the public from March to April of this year and other activities earmarked for continuous voluntary service and commitment to the public.

On disaster management, the committee chair headed by Dr. Alan Lopez. reported that three (3) trainings were attended by the staff , Jesicca Jasmin on Disaster Management Training at Waterfront Insular Hotel last March 11-18, 2011; the Regional Consultation on Disaster Risk Reduction Consultation Framework attended by the chapter administrator, Salve Abotanatin at Casa BlancaHotel, Legaspi City last March 28 ; and the 5-day training of the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Council(PDRRMC) dubbed Bulusan Summit at Coastal View Resort participated in by Disaster Management Staff (DMS), Belinda Pelagio.

200 families affected by the lahar flow in Irosin last March of this year were provided assistance by the PRC-Sorsogon Chapter through relief operation assistance and provision for other needs, here 3 houses were damaged because of the lahar flow and were given cash assistance.

For this month of April, the committee on safety services has started providing trainings on first aid and bloodletting services (BLS) training last April 4-9, 2011 and instructor’s training course that still is going on scheduled April 11-15 of this month. The practicum for these two trainings is slated April 18-19 also of this month.

The water survival training is scheduled this April 25-30, 2011 to be held at Alburo Spring Resort and Bacon Beach to teach those who would like to provide assistance and interested persons to learn how to swim.

To provide assistance to the public this Holy Week, PRC Sorsogon will also have a First Aid Station near the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral starting April 22- 25. A beach patrol will also be assigned in Bacon Beach, Rizal Beach this summer composed of PRC volunteers knowledgeable in safety services, first aid and swimming.

For the blood program services committee last March 11-19, 2011, PRC conducted an orientation to volunteer nurses in preparation for the opening of the blood activity program (BAP) comprising of 30 volunteer nursing passers and graduates.

PRC also awarded medals and certificates of commendation and appreciation to the 76 Red Cross youth volunteers for this year.

From Sorsogon State College, College of Criminology 22 students were awarded medals and certificates of appreciation, 13 high school student volunteers from the same school were also awarded, and another 3 also from SSC ; for Sorsogon National High School (SNHS) 21 students ; for St. Louise the Marillac College of Sorsogon SLMCS) 8 students ; and from Lydia Martinez Municipal High School (LMMHS) 9 students , were all awarded for the services they have tendered to the public as RCY volunteers of the PRC Sorsogon on the different programs they have participated in to provide voluntary service.

“Through this voluntary services given by the PRC-Sorsogon chapter, the PRC Board is continuously supporting the P-Noy administration in the institutionalization of the public-private partnership program”, Perete explained. (PIA-Sorsogon)
