LEGAZPI CITY, Albay, Philippines—An unidentified gunman shot dead a former policeman on Tuesday evening, police said Wednesday.
Julio Esquibas, 46, who had reportedly retired from the police with the rank of senior police officer 1, was killed at 6:20 p.m., at the Cawit Bridge, at the boundary of barangays (villages) Central and Tulay, in Casiguran town, located some 20 kilometers south of Sorsogon City, police said.
Esquibas sustained seven gunshot wounds in different parts of the body and was dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Police recovered six empty shells of a .45 pistol and one deformed slug.
Esquibas was a candidate for town councilor of Casiguran and he reportedly topped local surveys for the seat of the town council’s slot.
He used to be a member of the 509th Police Provincial Mobile Group of Sorsogon. At this point, police could not say if the killing had something to do with Esquibas’s previous work with the police force; they are looking into political motives behind the slay.
